Experimental Bitch Presents

measure for measure workshop and reading

In residence with At Peace Tea Factory, March 2019

Position: Dramaturg

Measure for Measure is set in a distant and alternative universe: a Renaissance-era Vienna where premarital sex is illegal. This hypocrisy and abuse of power is unsettlingly familiar to the contemporary viewer. We can easily draw a line between the fictitious Judge Angelo and the countless government officials and corporate executives who have abused their power for sex and dominance. When the very people who should be protecting our rights and defending us against persecution are the ones committing these crimes, who will hold them accountable?

A feminist reimagining, focusing on the role of the sex workers in the play and the rights of the female characters in a #MeToo society. In this contemporary take, themes are personalized through the characters and relationships that help us empathize and recognize why these cyclic nature of systemic oppression.
